Dymchurch wall, which protects Romney Marsh from the sea, has existed, in various forms, since Roman times.

Over the last few years, work has taken place to improve the sea defences from the north end of St Mary's Bay, to Martello Tower 23 (where the A259 meets the sea wall). 2.2km of the sea wall has been replaced by a stepped concrete revetment (similar to that at St Mary's Bay). The design includes a new wave return wall, raised flood wall (approx 0.5m), improved promenade, groynes to encourage the build-up of sands, and landscaping enhancements.

The "new" wall was officially opened in July 2011!
